Robotic Aliquoting & Puncturing Machine
Robotic Aliquoting & Puncturing Machine
Motion Design’s Robotic Aliquoting & Puncturing Machine automates carton puncturing and sample aliquoting into microwell plates, removing a repetitive manual process from the laboratory workflow.
The system punctures each carton, draws a precise volume and dispenses it into a microwell plate. Automatic pipette tip loading and ejection, together with cleaning and sterilisation between cartons, helps minimise the risk of cross-contamination while providing reliable, repeatable processing.

Key Benefits
- Frees up laboratory technicians - reduces the time spent manually puncturing cartons and transferring samples.
- Improved laboratory workflow - automates a repetitive, time-consuming part of sample preparation.
- Consistent sample handling - provides controlled, repeatable aliquoting across samples.
- Reduced risk of cross-contamination - automated cleaning and sterilisation helps maintain separation between samples.
- Improved operator safety - reduces repetitive manual tasks and the associated risk of repetitive strain injuries.
- Increased processing capacity - allows samples to be processed with minimal operator involvement.

Key Features
Automated Pipette Handling
Automatic pipette tip loading and ejection allows samples to be processed with minimal operator involvement.
Cleaning & Cross-Contamination Control
An automated ethanol wipe and wash process between samples helps minimise the risk of cross-contamination.
Sample Capacity & Throughput
The system holds up to five crates of samples and can complete a microwell plate in approximately 50 minutes, including control samples.
Automatic Recovery
Auto-recovery helps minimise downtime and allows the system to recover from certain interruptions during operation.
Multiple Carton Sizes
The standard machine accommodates both 1 litre and 200 mL cartons, with other container formats available through customisation.

Options & Customisation
- Vision system - optional machine vision for additional identification and traceability.
- Operator interface - touchscreen interface providing greater machine control and visibility.
- Carton inverter - additional inverter available for carton preparation before processing.
- Alternative containers - additional modes can be developed for different container types and sizes.
- Robot integration - the machine can be configured with different robot brands to suit project requirements.
- Insights integration - optional integration with Motion Design Insight software for live reporting and KPI visibility.
Other Laboratory Applications
While the system has been developed for dairy testing applications, it can be adapted for other laboratory processes requiring automated aliquoting of liquid samples.
Potential applications include:
- Food and beverage quality assurance laboratories
- Pharmaceutical testing and quality control
- Other laboratory applications requiring liquid sample aliquoting
