Automated Colony Counting System
Automated Colony Counting System
Petri Dish Handling, Microbial Colony Counting & Data Management
Motion Design’s Automated Colony Counting System streamlines Petri dish processing and colony counting in microbiology laboratories, helping increase throughput, reduce manual handling and improve consistency and traceability.
Designed around your laboratory workflow, the system combines automated Petri dish handling with an integrated colony counter and Motion Design software to manage samples, results and data throughout the counting process. Samples requiring further inspection can be identified for technician review, while colony count results and images are captured to provide a complete digital record.

KEY BENEFITS
- Increase Laboratory Throughput
Process batches of Petri dishes through colony counting and sorting with minimal technician involvement. - Focus Technician Time Where It Is Needed
Automatically identify samples that may require further inspection and direct them to technician stations for review, reducing the need to manually inspect every dish. - Improve Testing Consistency
Standardise Petri dish handling and colony counting while flagging results that meet defined criteria for further review, helping reduce the risk of samples requiring attention being overlooked. - Maintain Complete Sample Traceability
Track each Petri dish throughout the automated process, with sample identification, batch information, colony counting results and images. - Access Results & Historical Data
Retain colony count images and associated sample and batch data, providing a searchable record for review and historical analysis. - Reduce Laboratory Waste
Automatically separate Petri dish lids for recycling while directing samples that no longer require further analysis to waste.
System Overview
Petri dishes are loaded into the system in batches and automatically scanned to identify each dish and retrieve the relevant sample and test information. The lid is removed before the dish is presented to the integrated colony counter for imaging and analysis.
Motion Design software records the colony count, image and associated sample data, while identifying results that may require further inspection. Following analysis, dishes are automatically sorted according to the laboratory workflow.
Samples requiring further inspection are transported by conveyor to technician stations for review. Remaining dishes are automatically sorted and stacked into the required batches or directed to waste.

Software, Data and LIMS Integration
Motion Design software manages the automated workflow and provides the connection between the colony counting system, laboratory data and your Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- LIMS Integration: Custom software enables seamless connection with your Laboratory management system.
- Full Traceablity: Complete records of samples, tests and user actions.
- Searchable History: Access database of sample data, test results and colony counting images.
- Result Review & Management: Technicians can request samples, generate reports, modify information and review colony count data in real time.
